6 Tips for Building a Study Room or Library at Home

Whether you’re a student, a remote worker, or a bookworm, a study room or home library can be the perfect little haven to add to your home.

Having a dedicated space to work, study, and read can help boost your productivity and keep you feeling comfortable while doing so. Plus, depending on your design choices, the room can also be a nice place to rest and unwind after a long day of work.

Here are some of the best tips for bringing your own study room or library to life.

Add Built-In Storage Solutions

Storage is important to consider for a study room or library to keep everything organised and free of clutter. Fortunately, you can create plenty of storage space without having to buy shelves or containers by opting for built-in storage solutions instead.

You can install built-in shelves into your library, such as floating shelves or floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. These are effective storage options that don’t take up any floor space, allowing the room to feel spacious and open. Multi-functional furniture can also be a neat addition, such as stools with hidden storage or desks with an attached bookshelf.

Manage Outside Noise

Outside noise can affect your concentration while you’re in your study room, so it’s a good idea to look for suitable sound-proofing solutions. You can opt for sound absorption materials like acoustic panels, soundproof curtains, and seal gaps to soundproof the library and allow you to work in complete silence. You can enlist the help of builders Dunedin homeowners trust to renovate the space accordingly, so that everything is up to standard.

But if you don’t have the means to professionally soundproof the room, you can try masking the noise instead. A white noise machine or a speaker for instrumental music are good solutions for any minor noise issues without turning into distractions themselves.

Get Good Lighting

A good balance of natural light and overhead light can create a cosy atmosphere in a home library and even boost productivity. In particular, natural light has proven positive effects on mood, focus, and sleep quality.

Adding large windows to let the sunlight in would add some life and warmth to your library, making it feel more welcoming and comfortable. A large window can also be a great base for a reading nook in the room. Add a comfortable chair, a side table, and a shelf for your favourite books to create a relaxing little space to read and unwind.

Next, you’ll need overhead lighting for after the sun sets. Bright fluorescent lights are functional, but they can be uncomfortable to work under, especially for long periods of time. You can recreate a cosy library ambience by adding multiple light fixtures with variable dim levels, creating a warm and comforting glow. Then, add a table lamp for your study desk for better visibility and productivity while you work.

Use Comfortable Seating

If you want to recreate that warm and cosy library atmosphere, look for seating made from materials like wood, leather, or velvet. For example, you can get an ergonomic leather desk chair for working or studying, a chaise lounge for relaxing and reading novels, and extra seating like a loveseat or sofa for visitors. This combination of seating types and materials can help keep you comfortable no matter what you’re doing.

Use Scents

Aromatherapy can be a powerful mood setter, and there are multiple scents that you can use to aid in productivity while in your study room. Consider putting an aromatherapy diffuser and a small collection of essential oils on a desk or shelf so that you can reap their benefits as you work. For example, lavender, rosemary, and peppermint oils can all help you concentrate. Lavender can also improve sleep quality, so that you can have a good night’s rest after a long day.

Add Some Personal Touches

Unlike a regular public library, your study room or home library is your own space. Adding a bit of your own personality to its interior design not only shows off your unique tastes and interests, but also makes the space feel like home. Plus, being surrounded by all of your favourite things can do wonders for your mood and overall mindset. Choose your favourite colour palette for the furniture, walls, and flooring. You can also add some art pieces to the walls as decoration or display some of your favourite trinkets on your bookshelves. These little touches help tell your and your study room’s story and truly make the space your own.

Start Planning Your Ideal Study Space

If you’ve always dreamt of having your own home library or study room, now is the perfect time to make it come true. You can connect with an experienced team of builders who can help you create the perfect layout, add all of the details that you want, and put everything together to create the study room of your dreams.
