relocating to new place

You landed your dream job, but it’s interstate, which means relocating not only yourself but your family as well. Taking your family interstate is a big leap in your life so first off, take a deep breath, you’re not alone.

Many Aussie families decide to relocate every year, and while the excitement of a new start is real, so can be the stress. Between packing up the playroom, arranging movers, finding a new home, and helping your kids manage the emotional side, interstate moves can feel overwhelming. But with the right approach, you’ll look back and be so glad you made the jump.

Let’s make your interstate move not only smoother, but a family adventure you can all feel proud of. These practical tips will set you up for success, so you can focus on settling into your new home and making memories from day one.

Why Young Families Move Interstate

Relocating is rarely a snap decision for families. It might be for a dream job, or perhaps it could be to be closer to grandparents, or chasing the fantasy of having a house with a backyard big enough for a trampoline.

Whatever your reason, moving states means a lot more than forwarding your mail. You’re kickstarting a new life, and kids feel every part of that transition right along with you.

Planning Ahead: Your Roadmap to a Calmer Move

A smooth move is built on lots (and lots) of planning. Here’s a checklist-style strategy to keep your family organised and reduce surprises along the way:

1. Create a Family Timeline

While a calendar may be a helpful visual for your kids and the adults in the mix, physically pencil in target move dates and work backwards for when you need key things done. Here, you want to include milestones for home searching, decluttering, booking removals, and enrolling kids at new schools.

You also don’t want to forget to leave room for delays, having that wiggle room will allow you to account for any surprises.

2. Involve Your Kids Early

Kids do well with information and tasks that are age-appropriate. Perhaps get them to pack their favourite toys into one box or have them lead a room pack up if they are a bit older. Make the move a team effort for your family.

It can be daunting for children to move, especially when they will be leaving all that is familiar to them for the first time. To get them a little less hesitant, share reasons for the move and get them curious about the new area, even visit the new space before to scope out parks, best playgrounds, maybe spot local candy shops.

Give older kids roles, like helping plan their new rooms and designing their space how they would feel most comfortable.

3. Declutter and Downsize

Moving interstate is the perfect time to downsize on items that you no longer need or no longer serve a purpose. Of course, this is easier said than done but can really save you money and sanity.

Consider sorting toys and clothes room by room and donating or selling what you no longer use. You could organise a garage sale which is a fun way for kids to say goodbye to unloved toys and meet neighbours before leaving

In the same breath, you can streamline large furniture by taking measurements of your new home to avoid bringing stuff that won’t fit.

Tidy tip: Download free planning tools, checklists, and maintenance guides from Hooked Home’s resources section to keep the whole house—and your mind—in order.

Packing Tips for Maximum Efficiency

Packing can feel endless, but a little strategy makes a huge difference, especially as a family. Here are our top tips for packing interstate as a family.

  • Color-Code by Room: Use stickers or tape, kids can help with this, and it speeds up unpacking!
  • Essentials Box: Pack a “first night” box for every family member, including favorite bedding, snacks, a few toys, phone chargers, and toiletries.
  • Purge Before You Pack: The golden rule, never pay to move things you truly don’t need.
  • Label Clearly: List contents and which room they belong to.

Choosing The Right Movers

An interstate move is not your average Saturday, where you just chuck everything into the car and be on your way. It takes more coordination, especially with little ones underfoot so asking for help is sometimes paramount.

To find the right movers, it is important to start researching early. Experienced interstate removalists like Muval are perfect for a streamlined moving experience, especially for family units who need a little extra hand.

There are also family-friendly removalists who offer “full-pack” services (ideal for time-poor parents) and have experience settling families in new towns.

Settling In and Building Your New Life

Trying to lay your roots in a new state can feel very chaotic. Trying to find the best coffee place, becoming familiar with your local grocery store and meeting your neighbours can be intimidating. Becoming comfortable starts with the home.

Start by always making beds first when you come home or wake up to make nighttime easier, especially for your kids. When moving, consider setting up the kids’ rooms before common spaces, as a familiar toy or doona will go a long way in acclimatising to the new rooms.

To add familiarity to the neighbourhood, consider introducing yourselves to neighbours. Even a quick hello at the mailbox can kickstart lasting friendships and friends for your kids to play with.

Making Memories, Not Just Moves

Relocating interstate with your family is about so much more than logistics. It’s the start of new traditions, friendships, and adventures. Each challenge you face and overcome together will bring you closer. Years from now, you’ll look back at this fresh chapter as a defining family story.

Ready to get packing? Pull out the colored tape, rally the kids, and keep that sense of adventure alive. You’ve totally got this.
